Do you have the skills to be part of NPL’s role in giving the UK a world-leading position in the rapidly developing quantum technology market? You will be joining NPL’s Quantum Technologies Department at a very exciting time - as quantum phenomena are delivering breakthroughs in many fields. The Quantum Photonics team undertakes research to test and evaluate optical quantum information technologies, such as single-photon sources and detectors, terrestrial and satellite quantum key distribution (QKD) systems, quantum random number generators (QRNGs) - and the science behind these applications. We work with leading UK and European researchers from industry and academia, our counterparts at other national laboratories, and international standards developing organizations. We are growing our team of multi-disciplined scientists and engineers. A new permanent position is available to develop and apply experimental methods for evaluating QRNGs and QKD systems, and contribute to the drafting of related international standards. Your role can evolve as the technology landscape evolves. Salary is dependent on experience. Responsibilities (depending on experience and seniority): · Devising experimental methods to characterise optical fibre, free-space or ‘on-chip’ optical quantum information devices and systems · Building experimental set-ups and bespoke instrumentation · Designing and implementing control and data analysis software · Analytic and numerical analysis of experimental data · Writing scientific papers and making conference presentations · Contributing to the work of drafting international standards · Preparing and presenting project and internal reports · Identifying funding opportunities and preparing bids
